My Experience and Insights
Today, I worked at a sushi restaurant with Japanese staff for 9.5 hours.
Most of the Japanese staff are very kind to me and taught me how to make sushi.
However, I couldn’t memorize all the recipes because there are so many items on the menu.
Long Hours and Rest Time at the Sushi Restaurant
I had to work from 10 AM to 9 PM, but I had a 1.5-hour rest period.
I feel that 1.5 hours of rest is too long because I prefer to work more.
Australian Coworkers and Work Culture
There are coworkers from Australia at the sushi restaurant.
During my break, I talked with one of them.
She has been working at this restaurant for six years, even though she is only 19 years old.
I was surprised to learn that people in Australia can work from junior high school.
Making money by themselves is a great experience for children, which might be why most customers are so kind.
Different Perspectives on Post-High School Life
She graduated from high school one month ago and continues to work at the restaurant.
This surprised me because, in Japan, it’s common to either start working or go to university immediately after high school.
However, I realized it’s important for people to think about their lives and make their own decisions.
Life is only lived once, so it’s essential to take time to reflect on our paths.
The Importance of Taking a Break and Reflecting
While some people don’t need time to think about their lives, others, like me, do.
I believe it’s crucial to know that taking a break, like a working holiday, is an option.
Many Japanese people follow a predetermined path: graduating from university, starting a job, and then raising children.
I don’t want to criticize this lifestyle, but I think we should know that we have choices.
Our lives are our own, not for our parents, friends, government, or children.
True happiness comes from finding what we really want to do.
Aspirations and Respect for Coworkers
My coworker already understands these things, which is why I respect her.
Her plan is to become a flight attendant after this year.
It’s not an easy path, but I will cheer her on.
We also talked about her family and how she spends her time off.
One of my goals in coming to Australia is to make friends with Australians and learn about their lifestyle and mindset, so I look forward to talking with her more.
Finishing the Workday and Future Plans
I finished working at 9 PM.
If I work until closing time, we can take home sushi from the conveyor belt, which is great because I don’t have to make dinner.
Cooking is enjoyable, but getting a free meal helps reduce my food costs.
I have to work tomorrow morning as well, but I’m excited to save money for traveling around Australia!
